Find out what you and your little one can expect from their upcoming sports physical.

While summer isn’t quite over yet, before you know it the school year will be upon us and you’ll be trying to get your little one ready to go sports physicalback to school. And if they are excited to be playing any sports this year then it’s important that you make sure you schedule a sports physical for your child with one of our West Jordan, UT pediatricians as soon as possible.

What is involved in a sports physical?

There are two main parts to getting a sports physical: discussing your child’s medical history and then performing the actual physical exam. Their medical history is an important component to making sure they are healthy enough for certain physical activities.

Some of the topics we will cover include:

  • If they are up-to-date on their shots.
  • If they have a history of eating disorders.
  • A family history of health disorders or other serious issues.
  • Past sports-related injuries like concussions or fractures.
  • Allergies.
  • A history of asthma.
  • Any medications or supplements they are currently taking.

The more information you can provide our West Jordan pediatric doctors the better. We will be able to assess any potential issues that might occur.

During the actual physical exam, we will be checking the overall health of the body to look for any possible musculoskeletal problems. We will take your child’s vital signs and then check their hearing, vision, heart, lungs, spine and posture, and genitals. If your child has a clean bill of health then we will sign the school or league’s form saying that your child is healthy enough to participate.

Why is it important?

These exams are necessary for determining whether or not your child is healthy enough for the sport they want to play. Your child might present with a past injury that didn’t heal properly, which could potentially lead them to further injuries in the future. By detecting these problems before they occur we can put certain precautions in place to ensure that your child stays as safe and healthy on the field as possible.

Don’t leave a sports physical to the last minute or your little one might be sitting on the sidelines. Don’t let this happen to them. Call our Southwest Children’s Clinic LLC in West Jordan, UT today to schedule your child’s next appointment.
