Common Childhood Illnesses: Treatment and Prevention
Children can go through many different illnesses – many of which are picked up in daycare or school. In this guide, the team at Southwest Children’s Clinic shares some of the most common illnesses, how they occur, preventative measures, and when to call your pediatrician.
Ear Infections
Ear infections can be an awful pain for anyone and are very common in children. Not all ear pain is due to an infection. However, as untreated ear infections can lead to additional issues, visit your pediatrician as soon as possible for a proper diagnosis and any required medication.
Colds and Flu
Colds tend to spread quickly through schools and daycare facilities, so it’s not unusual for little ones to pick them up constantly. However, there is no cure, and in most cases, they’ll go on their own within a few days. Like colds, the flu spreads easily and can usually be cared for at home. Keep an eye on fevers, though. If they spike too high, call your pediatrician.
Chickenpox
Most people had chickenpox when they were young – or knew someone that did. Though it can be frustrating for kids, it’s not typically dangerous. Chickenpox can normally be treated at home with comfort measures, such as creams. However, if your child won’t eat, has a fever that lasts more than four days, or the fever exceeds 102 degrees, give your pediatrician a call.
Conjunctivitis
If your little one has eye redness, discharge, swelling, or itchiness, it’s likely pink eye or conjunctivitis. Bacterial or viral conjunctivitis typically needs antibiotic ointments or eye drops, so schedule a visit with your child’s doctor.
Strep Throat
Strep throat is a fairly common infection that is often confused with a sore throat. As there is no way to determine the difference at home, it’s important to see your pediatrician for a proper diagnosis. Strep throat requires an antibiotic, so it’s best to be safe.
Preventative Measures
You can’t prevent every illness, but regular checkups and vaccinations can go a long way in keeping your child healthy. They can also reduce the likelihood and severity of illnesses like the flu and chickenpox. Additionally, teaching your children how to wash their hands regularly can help reduce the chances of illnesses, as many are spread through contact with germs and viruses.
