Another school year has started and it’s important that all children get sports physicals.

With a hearty farewell to summer, we welcome in another school year. Each school year you may have to take your child to their West Jordan pediatrician for a physical examination. If your child is planning to participate in any kind of athletic activities or be part of a Sports Physicalssports team then a sports physical is crucial. What is a sports physical?

The main purpose of this exam is to determine if your child is healthy enough to participate in their sport of choice. Many states require that all children and teenagers get a sports physical each year. Even if they aren’t mandatory, your West Jordan, UT pediatrician recommends that your child have one each year to make sure they are healthy enough for certain physical activity.

What does a sports physical involve?

There are two main parts to a sports physical: medical history and a physical exam. During the first portion of your child’s physical we will discuss aspects of their medical history including,

  • Past injuries
  • Preexisting conditions
  • Past hospitalizations and surgeries
  • Family illnesses
  • Medications they are talking including vitamins and supplements

Your physical exam will include,

  • Measuring your height and weight
  • Checking your vitals, including blood pressure and heart rate
  • Checking vision and hearing
  • Evaluating flexibility, strength, reflexes and posture

Why is a sports physical necessary?

Getting a sports physical is important because it allows us to determine ahead of time whether there are any health problems that could affect your child’s ability to play sports. We will also determine whether past injuries may increase their chances of developing future injuries and what can be done to prevent that from happening.

Aside from making sure that your child is healthy enough to play sports we can also offer up advice to prevent injuries and to stay healthy. For example, we can show your teen or child a variety of warm-ups and exercises to do prior to the game to get their muscles warm and ready for activity.
